What is Heardle?

The online musical puzzle Heardle was developed by the digital music studio Omaske Studios. The popular Wordle website, which is noted for its simplicity, served as the game’s inspiration. Heardle is similar to Wordle in that you can only play it once per day without any commercials or sign-in requirements. Unlike other app-based puzzles, this avoids data mischief and addiction. Heardle is a web-only game; there are no iOS or Android applications available.

How to play Heardle

Heardle is a musically themed version of Wordle or Framed. Participants try to identify the song’s author and title after hearing a snippet from a well-known song. Every wrong or skipped response allows the player to hear a few additional seconds of the music. Users will hear the music for a maximum of 16 seconds if they guess correctly six times.

The objective is to identify the music with the fewest guesses possible.

The word game Wordle, which saw millions of players check in every day within months after its release in late 2021, may have been most famously inspired by Heardle.

The most important event in Heardle’s history was its acquisition by Spotify in July 2022 for an unknown sum.

Heardle is still free, and the game itself hasn’t changed, but the acquisition has undergone a few adjustments, such as a switch from SoundCloud to Spotify as the preferred player, which now enables players to listen to the complete track after the game is over.

This is one of the reasons Spotify was drawn to Heardle. According to Jeremy Erlich, worldwide head of music at Spotify, “We are continuously exploring novel and fun ways to boost music discovery and help artists meet new fans.”

It hasn’t been a simple transfer, either; after the acquisition, the game was only available in a few countries (the UK, US, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand), and players have complained that streaks have vanished.

For those who are unaware, Wordle experienced a similar situation, with some players’ streaks reset once the New York Times bought the app.

Heardle will continue to be developed, and Spotify has hinted that it would “enable music enthusiasts to engage more intimately with artists and challenge friends – and have some fun in the process” through the game “and other interactive experiences”.
